APMDD Workshop on Women, Land, Food and Climate
At a time of multiple crises and climate change, there is clearly an urgent need to heighten the fight for women’s rights to land and livelihoods, as part of our overall struggle for economic justice and empowerment.
At a time of multiple crises and climate change, there is clearly an urgent need to heighten the fight for women’s rights to land and livelihoods, as part of our overall struggle for economic justice and empowerment. We cannot do so without understanding the issues involved and strategizing collective actions in relation to land, agriculture and climate. Taking steps in this direction, Jubilee South – Asia/Pacific Movement on Debt and Development together with the members of its Working Group on Women and Gender organized the “Workshop on Women, Land, Agriculture and Climate” from 22 to 23 November 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The workshop is one of the initiatives in preparation for the launch of JSAPMDD’s campaign on Women, Land and Resources in 2014. It was aimed at providing the venue for women leaders of JSAPMDD member organizations to take stock of and deepen collective understanding of the general situation, issues and challenges around the nexus of women, land, agriculture and climate change in Asia as well as to draw up strategies and concrete action plans for the further development of JSAPMDD’s Women and Gender Program.
More than 20 women leaders of grassroots organizations from Indonesia, Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Nepal actively participated in the workshop. They represent the following JSAPMDD member organizations: Bangladesh Krishok Federation, Adivasi Mulvasi Astitva Rakcha Manch (Platform of Indigenous Adivasi People to Defend their Existence), National Coastal Women’s Movement India, Civil Society Forum for Climate Justice Indonesia, Koalisi Anti Utang Indonesia (Anti-Debt Coalition Indonesia), WALHI/Friends of the Earth Indonesia, Aksi! For Gender, Social and Environmental Justice Indonesia, Solidaritas Perempuan Indonesia (Women’s Solidarity Indonesia), People’s Coalition on the Right to Water Indonesia, Pakistan Farmer’s Committee, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, Rural Reconstruction Nepal, Freedom from Debt Coalition Philippines, National Rural Women’s Coalition Philippines and SEAFISH for Justice.
